Section #5

Section #5

Make Disciples & Walk in Power

"I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh." Galatians 5:16

Make Disciples.

Our whole mission is to win souls and make disciples. This message is clear from Jesus in Matthew 28:19-20:

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you." Matthew 28:19-20

As you go and make disciples, it’s important to understand what a disciple of Jesus truly is. This is what Jesus says about being His disciple in John 8:

"If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:31-32

Throughout each section, we’ve highlighted numerous Scriptures because, as disciples, we must know what the Word says in order to live in obedience to our Father in heaven. The word "disciple" means a follower of a teacher, a learner. We learn through His Word and by the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

As you make disciples, your role is to love them and consistently instill the Truth, the Word of God, into their lives. This helps them grow in obedience to the Lord and equips them to share the Gospel and make disciples themselves.

As believers we were never meant to exist in isolation, or keep the Truth we have received to ourselves. We are disciples who make disciples — who in turn make more disciples. This is been the pattern from the very beginning, ever since Jesus first called His twelve disciples. Disciples making disciples who make disciples.

Walk in Power.

Christianity is not boring.

In fact, Jesus actually invites us into a supernatural life with Him that is empowered by the Holy Spirit. Every believer is called to a life of purpose, authority, and boldness. This is what He calls us to in the Great Commission.

"And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; they will pick up serpents with their hands; and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.” Mark 16:15-18

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead now lives in you. This is resurrection power. It was first displayed in you when you were brought from spiritual death to life, and it continues to work in you daily.

"If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you." Romans 8:11

As you abide in Jesus, the Spirit transforms and renews you, making you more like Jesus, in a lifelong process of sanctification. The Spirit produces fruit in your life—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and more (Galatians 5:22-23). He empowers you to live a godly life (2 Peter 1:3), to boldly share the gospel (Acts 1:8), and equips you with spiritual gifts to serve and strengthen the Church (Romans 12:6-8, 1 Corinthians 12-14, Ephesians 4:11-13).

"His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness." 2 Peter 1:3

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8

And just like the early church, we can echo their prayer to live courageously for God and proclaim the gospel with power and boldness:

“Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.” Acts 4:29–30
